Prabowo Acknowledges Tough Talks with Trump on Tariffs

President Prabowo Subianto recently disclosed that he engaged in direct discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump concerning trade tariffs, characterizing the negotiations as challenging yet ultimately fruitful. “I had a conversation with President Donald Trump. Thankfully, despite the tough negotiations, we were able to reach an agreement,” Prabowo stated at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta. Both parties demonstrated a mutual understanding of their respective national interests during the talks. The outcome of the negotiations resulted in the United States agreeing to reduce import tariffs on Indonesian goods from 32% to 19%. “The tariff was lowered from 32% to 19%. I continued to negotiate – I must say, he is quite a tough negotiator,” Prabowo commented. He highlighted that the entire process was meticulously planned by the Indonesian government, with a strong emphasis on safeguarding the interests of the public and domestic workers. “We meticulously calculated and negotiated each step of the way. The well-being of our workers is paramount to me. We took a firm stance. This is our proposal – we cannot exceed that. However, the security of our workers is crucial,” he added. Additionally, Prabowo expressed confidence in Indonesia’s economic durability amid global uncertainties, stating, “I am very optimistic. Our economy is robust and in good condition. Therefore, we will remain resilient regardless of the circumstances.” He also mentioned plans for a forthcoming visit to the United States, with a possible meeting with President Trump scheduled for later this year, possibly in September or October. On a lighter note, Prabowo joked about what might be discussed during the meeting, including the possibility of playing golf with Trump. “But I might be a bit nervous if he invites me to play golf,” Prabowo quipped.
